Rationale of the Programme

Providing training of nurses at bachelor’s degree level is one way of raising the standards of health care delivery to Kenyans, since nurses are the backbone of health service delivery.

It is envisaged that the graduates will apply critical thinking in the process and come up with practical solutions to solve the various patients /client’s health problems and needs. The improvement in the services will be achieved through integration of the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired.

The programmes have been designed to recognize that its graduands will have a strong clinical, biomedical and community health knowledge base in order to provide quality health care that will integrate curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative health care.

The professional practice of Nursing is regulated by an Act of parliament (Cap.257 of the laws of Kenya). This ensures that high standards are maintained during training and practice while observing professional ethics of conduct

Rationale of the Programme

The high incidence and prevalence of preventable diseases and emergence of new diseases calls for new strategies and approaches to healthcare delivery. This can be attained through a number of ways notable among them being improving the standards of training for clinical officers who form an integral part of the primary healthcare system in Kenya. Availability of highly skilled and updated clinical officers in a background of adequate resources would provide Kenyans with the much-needed quality, timely, accessible and affordable health care services.

The major causes of morbidity and mortality in Africa are diseases which are preventable.  For this reason, Uzima University will integrate the teaching of this course in the community strategy to strengthen the community-health system interface based on the principles of Primary Health Care (PHC). The cornerstones of the health system are health promotion and disease prevention. To realize this, the health system needs professionals who are highly qualified and whose basic duty is to possess the ability to work closely with communities. The current trend in medical practice is Primary Health Care (PHC) which emphasizes primary prevention. The Clinical Officer being the practitioner in the frontline needs to be trained adequately in the area of PHC including research. Moreover, the Bachelors degree enables the clinical officer to grow academically through masters‟ degrees and doctorate degrees.

It is the idea of Uzima University to train Clinical officers with degree whose status may be called Clinical Officer Special Grade because of acquisition of a University degree. So that if approved by the Clinical Officers Council will have to enter the civil service as Clinical Officer Special Grade. Clinical officer special grade may then be regarded as Clinical Officers with degree who are higher than the conventional clinical officers but are still to be supervised by Medical doctors (officers). This program aims to improve the academic potentials of clinical officers from diploma to degree level so that they will be more efficient in handling the challenges of the 21st century in infectious disease.

Microbiology is the scientific discipline that studies microbes and microbial diseases. Microbes are small organisms that require microscopic tools for visualization and these include bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. The discovery of microbes and the realization that they represent causative agents of human, animal and plant diseases has greatly transformed biological sciences. Basic practical skill in research and market driven courses in microbiology offered at the Department of Microbiology emphasizes our strong commitment in eradicating these pathogens.

Microbiologists are needed to do the research required for the future battle against infectious diseases worldwide, understanding the environmental importance of microbes and to exploit them for food production, biotechnological and industrial applications.

One unique feature of this program is the health journal development courses which gives priority on health system management issues, but also to showcase their research project for use in the industry. It is hoped that this exercise will nurture the knowledge and skills needed to undertake and critic research, an area that is greatly lacking in the African continent.

Rationale of the Programme

Needs assessment

Modern healthcare is very complex and rapidly changing due to increased medical knowledge and techniques and requires changes in approaches to finance, organization and delivery of the expected services. At all levels, healthcare managers are increasingly acting as the ‘stewards’ of scarce resources for health. They are responsible for ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and fairness in allocating resources to meet the needs and choices of service users in a sustainable manner.

This Health Systems Management course has been designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore the mechanisms for improving healthcare organization and delivery in local and international contexts. Students will do this from a research-led perspective and where possible will be encouraged to actively evaluate impact of service delivery through researching or auditing health projects. The need for this course emanates from a performance needs assessment conducted in 2010 by Ministry of Health and USAID. The Human Resource for Health (HRH) Strategic Plan pointed out that Leadership and Management training was “missing” from the health sector, and it had become an objective of that plan. There was no program for conducting Human Resource Management training or for hiring individuals with those skills. The HRH plan pointed to the dearth of HRM skills and skilled professionals as a major gap in the HRH situation in Kenya, and formed the basis for hiring and training specific to HRM. This notwithstanding, the health systems generally remained weak with most health facilities frequently characterised by operational and management inefficiency, poor quality of services and poor capacity in planning, budgeting and management. There is increased need for proper management at all levels and we need to train health workers who can manage and develop health services at all levels of health care.

In addition the transfer of health service delivery to county governments requires new capacity building and technical support for county-level health leadership.
